The Ski Classics Pro Tour Season XVII starts next weekend in Bad Gastein, Austria. Ahead of the new winter season, here is an overview of the Pro Team competition and a clear explanation of how the Pro Team Tempo works.
On Saturday, December 13, Ski Classics Season XVII bursts into action with the Bad Gastein Pro Team Tempo, a 7km PTT race returning to the calendar after a one-year break.
The event allows Pro Teams and their athletes to showcase their new race suits, present sponsors, and introduce recruits to the world of Ski Classics. The teams have trained together throughout the off-season, pushing each other in intervals and building their collective strength. Now, they finally have the chance to race as a unit and show how strong they are as a team.
Pro Team Tempo (PTT)
The Bad Gastein Pro Team Tempo returns with a fast, tactical format.
The competition is organized as an interval start race with block starts. One Pro Team starts at a time, in reverse order based on last season’s Pro Team ranking, with the top five teams spread across the starting field. The gap between blocks is four minutes. Male Pro Team athletes start 30 seconds before female Pro Team athletes.
Male athletes caught by female athletes must leave a gap and stay at least 20 meters behind. Pro Teams must ease when being overtaken and avoid interfering with the passing team’s chosen line.
The finishing time of each team’s second-fastest male and second-fastest female determines the final classification. Pro Team Tempo points are awarded according to the official points table (Appendix 2) for both the Champion bib and Pro Team competition.
Teams must start with at least two male and two female athletes to earn Pro Team points. Teams with fewer athletes may still start, but separately from the standard Pro Team procedure.
The last time the format appeared on the calendar, Team Engcon claimed victory. With the top teams arriving in strong form, this year’s edition promises an exciting start for both athletes and fans.

Pro Team Competition
According to Ski Classics Rules & Regulations, the Pro Team competition is based on the total amount of Pro Team points gathered throughout the season.
Points are collected from:
- The Champion points of each team’s best two men and best two women
- The team’s total Sprint and Climb points
- 50% of the Champion points of the team’s best Youth athlete
- 50% of the Champion points of the team’s best athlete from an emerging country (QCI)
If Premium Sprint points are awarded at an event, they are added on top of the Pro Team points of the day. If Premium Sprint points are awarded at a separate sprint event, those points become the Pro Team points for that race – no other Pro Team points in sprint events.
The list below reflects the final Pro Team Competition standings from Season XVI.
