This Finnish Pro Team has been very successful in enhancing the culture of the sport on their home turf and coming up with good results. After securing the 25th position in the Pro Team ranking during Season XIV, Team Mäenpää will proudly carry the blue and white colors of Finland’s flag in the upcoming winter season.
For the upcoming Ski Classics Season XV, Team Mäenpää is bringing seven Pro Team athletes, four men and three women: Robin Mäenpää (2002), Hannes Mäenpää (1996), Viktor Mäenpää (1994), Anne Kyllönen (1987), Amanda Nyfors (2000), David Sulkakoski (1995), and Vilma Kanerva (2002).
Team Mäenpää’s journey to Pro Team status began with a group of construction workers who shared a passion for competitive skiing.
“The uniqueness of the teams is that it all started from a bunch of active construction workers who liked to compete against each other. The team evolved from a company team to a professional team in Ski Classics,” says Pro Team Director Kim Mäenpää.
One of the defining characteristics of Team Mäenpää is the remarkable cohesion that exists among the squad. The athletes work closely together, fostering a sense of unity and teamwork that sets them apart, with most of the team members calling Finnish Ostrobothnia their home, creating a strong local connection.
As they enter Ski Classics Season XV, this Finnish Pro Team has set clear objectives to guide their journey: “The Pro Team’s primary goal is that all skiers in the team get the opportunity to develop,” says Mäenpää and elaborates on the importance of collective performance:
“A goal is also to be able to perform as a team during competitions through cooperation.”
What makes Team Mäenpää stand out are the key strengths that they believe will carry them to good results in the upcoming season:
“The team works in an organized and systematic way,” says Kim, and adds that their open-mindedness and willingness to embrace innovation and change set them on a path of continuous improvement.
Lastly, they harness the power of “Finnish sisu” – an innate Finnish quality often defined as determination and perseverance – which propels them forward, no matter their challenges.
