Marcialonga in Italy has twice been awarded as the “Best Event of the Year” in Visma Ski Classics. The race was established in 1971 when some innovative Italians decided to create their own version of Vasaloppet. Marcialonga has now reached the legendary status of its own as its unique atmosphere and the course that runs through small historic villages are the trademarks of the event attracting thousands of skiers every year.
The race starts in Moena, Val di Fassa, and finishes on the main street of Cavalese, Val di Fiemme, passing through 13 villages and thousands of cheering spectators. The final climb, Cascata Hill, is probably one of the most famous landmarks in the history of long distance skiing.
This winter, Petter Eliassen, Team BN Bank, finally managed to win Marcialonga after an impressive breakaway in the final climb. He says that winning the prestigious race was perhaps one of the greatest achievements in his entire life.
