A brutal accident nearly ended her career. Now, Anikken Gjerde Alnes opens up about the fight back, the support from Team Engcon, and the unlikely journey that culminated in winning the overall Ski Classics title.
When Anikken Gjerde Alnes looks back on last season, some moments are still challenging to put into words.
“There are many things from last season that I just can’t describe,” she says.
It has been just over a year since the accident that could have had far more serious consequences. During a roller ski training session, she was hit by a car. What followed were months of rehabilitation, uncertainty, and a race against time to be ready for the start line in December.
As she recounts what happened today—and especially what it took to return—she is still searching for the right words.
“It’s completely mind-blowing… I’m okay, and yet that actually happened.”
Returning to competition was far from guaranteed. Every step forward came with worry, and every bit of progress demanded enormous mental strength. At the same time, she felt there was one thing that carried her through the entire process.
“It was such a huge relief just to be there. I feel the team has been supporting me every step of the way.”
The team’s support proved crucial—not only in helping her believe a comeback was possible but also in getting her through the difficult periods when both body and mind were struggling. Gradually, step by step, she began to rediscover the strength that had made her one of the most promising athletes in Ski Classics.
That she ultimately won the overall Ski Classics title is a remarkable achievement: from accident and uncertainty to standing on top of the podium at the end of the season.
